Loans without a permanent contract

How UK lenders judge zero-hours, agency and fixed-term income, the support to check in low months, and which loans suit or do not suit irregular pay.

Zero-hours contracts, agency shifts, fixed-term jobs, seasonal work and gig apps now make up a large part of low-paid work in the United Kingdom. Many people in these jobs work hard and pay their bills, yet find that lenders treat their income as unreliable. The difficulty is rarely the type of contract itself; it is that pay goes up and down from month to month, which makes a fixed repayment harder to plan.

This page looks at how lenders assess irregular income, how to present yours honestly, which support exists for months when hours dry up, and which kinds of credit fit, or do not fit, an unpredictable pay packet.

How lenders look at non-permanent work

UK lenders must check that a loan is affordable before agreeing it. With irregular income they usually focus on:

  • Length of work history: how long you have been earning, even across several employers or agencies.
  • Average and lowest income: many look at the last three to six months of bank statements or payslips and plan around the weaker months.
  • Regular outgoings: rent, council tax, childcare and existing credit.
  • Your credit file: missed payments matter more than the contract type.

A fixed-term contract ending soon can be a problem if the loan runs much longer than the job. Be honest: overstating hours or income can lead to a loan you cannot repay and may be treated as fraud.

Preparing a credible application

You can make variable pay easier to understand. Keep payslips and P60s, and for self-employed or gig work, your Self Assessment tax calculations and platform earnings statements. Write down your lowest monthly income over the past year and build any repayment around that figure, not around your best month. If you also receive Universal Credit, keep your statements: they show how your payment adjusts when earnings fall, which some lenders take into account.

Applying to many lenders in a short time can leave several hard searches on your file. Use eligibility checkers that run a "soft search" first, as these do not affect your credit score.

Support for low-paid months before borrowing

Irregular income often means the problem is a short gap rather than a lasting shortfall. Before borrowing, check:

  • Universal Credit: if your hours are low or unpredictable, you may be entitled to a top-up that rises when you earn less. Many people in insecure work do not claim. A free benefits calculator can give you an estimate in minutes.
  • Budgeting Advance: for Universal Credit claimants who meet the conditions, an interest-free advance for essential costs, including some costs of starting or keeping a job.
  • Statutory Sick Pay and holiday pay: agency and zero-hours workers often have rights to these; check before assuming you have none.
  • Local crisis support: your council can help with food, energy or essential items in an emergency.
  • Payment plans: energy, water and council tax bills can usually be spread if you ask early.

Our page on borrowing between jobs covers the situation where work has stopped altogether.

Credit that suits irregular pay

Credit union loans

Credit unions are member-owned and often more flexible about variable income than banks. Some will consider a pattern of saving with them as part of your application. Interest is capped by law, and early repayment, for example after a good month, usually costs nothing extra.

Small, short and flexible

Choose the smallest amount you need over the shortest term you can afford in a poor month. Check that you can overpay without penalty when work is busy. A loan that leaves no margin in a quiet month is too big.

Salary-linked schemes

Some employers offer salary advance or workplace loan schemes. Check the fees carefully and remember that an advance on wages simply reduces your next pay packet; it does not create new money.

Products that work badly with variable income

Some offers seem designed for people in insecure work but can be costly:

  • Payday loans: the repayment date may fall in a week with few shifts. The Financial Conduct Authority cap limits charges, yet rolling over a loan quickly adds up.
  • Buy now, pay later: easy to stack across several shops, and a missed instalment in a quiet month can lead to fees and collection.
  • Guarantor loans: if you cannot pay, a friend or relative becomes responsible.
  • Unarranged overdrafts: a costly way to absorb an uneven month.

Always compare on the APR and the total amount repayable.

Scams to watch for

Workers on short contracts are often targeted with messages promising loans "for any job type" or "no payslips needed". Common warning signs include a fee demanded before payout, contact through social media or a messaging app, pressure to decide immediately, and requests for passwords or one-time codes. Check every firm on the Financial Conduct Authority register and never pay money to receive money.

Notes for other countries

In France, the absence of a permanent contract (CDI) is a frequent reason for refusal. People on fixed-term or temp contracts can ask the CAF about the prime d'activité, use a France Services office for help with claims, and look at supported microcredit through an association. Those starting a business can contact Adie. Un crédit vous engage et doit être remboursé. Vérifiez vos capacités de remboursement avant de vous engager.

Checklist before applying

  • Have I checked whether I can claim or increase Universal Credit?
  • Do I know my lowest monthly income over the past year?
  • Does the repayment still work in that low month?
  • Have I used soft-search eligibility checks rather than full applications?
  • Have I asked a credit union before any high-cost lender?
  • Can I overpay without penalty in a busy month?
  • Is there a buffer, even a small one, for weeks with no shifts?

If your income is so unpredictable that existing bills are already falling behind, speak to a free debt adviser first. Our page on support when debts get out of hand lists where to start.
